Top 10 best argumentative topics rated by the LoveToKnow editors.

Arguments

Top 10 List     how we choose
Abortion
The argument of pro-choice or pro-life is one that has been raging in American society since the Supreme Court decided for abortion in the landmark Roe versus Wade case back in 1973. Norma McCorvey was the "Roe" part of the case, and has herself been on both sides of this issue. In 1995, she joined the pro-life movement. This site offers a look at both sides of the issue, The site offers editorials on many of today's top argumentative topics. They even write about why poll results are not a good measure of what decisions should be made in Washington, D.C.
Alcohol
There are several sides to the alcohol debate. Some say that nothing good ever came from alcohol, some say that alcohol in moderation is actually healthy for you and some say you should be able to do whatever you want it if doesn't hurt others. Drinking too much alcohol too fast can cause alcohol poisoning. If you have teenagers, you may want to talk to them about the dangers of teen drinking and why they should never get behind the wheel of a car after having even one drink, as it can severely impair judgment. Drinking is legal in most states for those over the age of 21, so while you can debate the intelligence of drinking, there really is no arguing whether or not it is allowed.
Death Penalty
Life and death is another topic that people debate in depth. On one side of the fence, the argument is that executing serious criminals discourages other criminals from committing crimes and offers some relief to the families of the victims. On the other side, the plea is that all life is precious and prisoners should be allowed to serve out life sentences rather than be killed. The arguments in this debate seem almost endless. Some of the topics that can be argued both for and against are the methods of execution and whether they are humane, the cost of keeping prisoners confined for life instead of executing and retribution for the families.
Economy
Economics is a widely varied topic that has many different issues that can be argued, from what type of economic system is best to choices made by the Federal Reserve and on Wall Street that impact the economy. This complex monster requires intensive study and research and this site can help you formulate the information you need to make an intelligent argument. You'll find articles and commentary such as "The Costs of Government", "Two Cheers for Fiscal Austerity" and "Stone Age Banking". If you need a basic introduction to these topics, you may want to start with Ten Key Ideas: Opening the Door to the Economic Way of Thinking.
Gambling
Is gambling a fun past time or a serious addiction? The answer often lies with the person doing the gambling. However, those who oppose gambling argue that with gambling forums come other risky behaviors and the belief that there is increased crime around casinos. Those who are for the opportunity to gamble if you want to believe that it brings a much needed boost to local economies and provides a form of entertainment to those who visit the establishment. The truth is likely somewhere in the middle. Some people do have serious gambling addictions and for them any type of gambling can be a problem, but others can stop after losing just 20 or 30 dollars.
Global Warming
Finding a site that doesn't have a bias one way or the other on this topic is fairly difficult. LoveToKnow's Green Living channel offers a look at many different topics that can help to reduce your carbon footprint and reduce global warming. Find out how much solar power costs. Learn about types of pollution. You'll also find some basic information that will explain exactly what the term global warming means, what causes global warming and what the impact is on the environment. If you still need additional information, you'll find what the main causes of global warming are and what you can do to stop global warming.
Gun Control
This pros and cons site on various public policies tackles the tough issue of gun control. Take a look at both sides of the argument and common topics that arise when gun control comes before the American government. Topics include the differing viewpoints on what the Second Amendment really means, if there should or shouldn't be tighter gun control laws and whether any of this has an impact on criminal activities that involve firearms. The site also contains related articles, such as How to Become a Gun Dealer.
Politics
You've likely heard it said that you should never discuss religion or politics. Emotions tend to run high when it comes to these two issues. Belief systems are firmly established for many people in both of these areas. Still, a discerning citizen will likely want to check a few facts and get some information on potential candidates for whom she might vote for come fall. It is hard to find a political site that doesn't have an agenda of some sort these days. Even some of the big sites that advertise themselves as non partisan were created by people with a specific affiliation to one party. This site seems to be one of the better sites for being fair and balanced, but always consider both sides when reading biographical information on candidates.
Religion
Talk about your hot button topics! There are so many areas to argue on religion that you'd need a lifetime to get through them all. Does God exist? Is hell a real place? How could God forgive such a horrible person? Not only are there big topics that people like to argue about, but there are many smaller ones to argue amongst each religion. For example, one Christian church might believe in submersion for baptism while the next argues that a little sprinkle of water is all that is needed. You can be certain that any topic about religion is sure to spark an argument or two. How passionately you argue often depends upon how much you believe in your own faith.
Social Programs
There are many social programs offered today, from Welfare to Medicare. There are probably just as many sides to a debate on many of the social programs being run by our government today. This site offers both sides of the debate and an opportunity for visitors to voice their own opinions. You'll find topics such as whether or not Internet purchases should be taxed and a variety of information on the many health care and health issue debates raging. In addition to discussions on actual health care policies, you'll also find info like whether or not marijuana should be illegal.
