Beatrix Potter
Beloved children's author and creator of the Peter Rabbit character. Beatrix Potter was raised in Victorian England. Her brother was sent away to school, while she stayed home and learned music and art. Her fiance died tragically and she remained unmarried until the age of 47. Beatrix Potter wrote books such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, The Tale of Two Bad Mice and The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. |

C.S. Lewis
With the recent release of the first Chronicles of Narnia movie, C. S. Lewis' children's books are quickly becoming a favorite with yet another generation. C.S. Lewis was born in Northern Ireland. He was a good friend of J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings. Lewis was a very prolific writer, producing fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Among his notable children's books are titles such as The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and The Magician's Nephew. |

Dr. Seuss
Few authors have captured the imagination of children as Dr. Seuss did. Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Massachusetts in 1904. He attended Dartmouth, was denied a fellowship to Oxford but attended anyway and met his wife there. His wife is the one who encouraged him to write children's books, and the rest is history. Seuss' most popular titles include The Cat in the Hat, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, and the upcoming movie made from the book Horton Hears a Who. |

E.B. White
White wrote for The New Yorker for years and wrote some of the most-loved children's novels of all time, many of which have been made into movies. E.B. White was born in New York and attended Cornell University. His books included Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little and The Trumpet of the Swan. |

Janette Sebring Lowrey
At some point, almost everyone has read the story book The Pokey Little Puppy. The author of this book is a bit obscure, but Janette Sebring Lowrey lived in Texas. She wrote teen fiction for Harper and Row, but her early childhood book has remained a classic through several generations and still sells many copies every year, keeping it one of the top books of all time. There are several different versions of the book on the market, including 65th anniversary edition. |

Judy Blume
Judy Blume was raised in New Jersey and received a Bachelor's in Education from New York University (NYU). She has won numerous awards for her books. Judy Blume won recognition for books such as Are You There, God? It's me, Margaret, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Freckle Juice and Superfudge. She then turned her sites to adult fiction, where she has also found success. Blume continues to be a beloved author today. |

Kathryn Laskey
One of today's rising stars, Kathryn Laskey has created a series of books based on the world of owls. Laskey's Guardians of Ga'Hoole series is currently on release number fourteen, and each book finds continued success. Laskey grew up in Indiana. Other books by Laskey include books written for series such as Dear America, The Royal Diaries and Camp Princess. Laskey has also written many stand alone books, such as Night Journey, Memoirs of a Book Bat and The Bone Wars. |

Scott O'Dell
Anyone who has read the tale Island of the Blue Dolphins, almost instantly becomes a fan of Scott O'Dell and his books geared for young audiences. He was born in Los Angeles. Many of O'Dell's stories are based on history or true stories turned into fiction. He attended several universities, including Stanford. Many people remember this author's name from the emotional performance by Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail where she talks about Silverstein's shoes books. Noel Streatfeild was actually Mary Noel Streatfeild. She was born in Sussex England. Her books included Ballet Shoes, Tennis Shoes, Party Shoes, Theater Shoes, Family Shoes, Dancing Shoes, Theater Shoes, Movie Shoes, Skating Shoes, Traveling Shoes and many other single title books for children. |

Wilson Rawls
Although he didn't write many books, the book that Wilson Rawls is best remember for is Where the Red Fern Grows. Rawls was born in the Oklahoma Ozarks. His other notable work was the title Summer of the Monkeys. Both books have been turned into movies. Rawls was often invited to speak to various groups in the 1970s.
