Top Family Dogs
Top 10 List      how we choose
Beagle
The Beagle has long been a loyal hunting companion and family dog. These mild-natured, smart canines are good with both adults and children. They get along well with other pets or in a single-pet household. As long as they have some form of companionship, it doesn't matter if they are human or animal. Beagles come in a number of different color patterns and sizes.
Collie
Ever since the days of Lassie, Collies have captured the hearts of America's children. These loving pets have been known to run alongside children and even shepherd them to safety when necessary. Although the exact moment in history when Collies began is unknown, they definitely date back to the 1700s. This site offers information on breed standards for these highly active dogs.
Dachshund
Also affectionately dubbed "wiener dogs", these fun, elongated dogs make good family pets if they are exposed to children from a young age. Dachshunds tend to choose one person in the family to bond with strongly and will be fiercely protective of that person, so should be encouraged to bond with the children over adults. You'll find many tips on this site for training your dog to be a good family member.
English Bulldog
One of many different bulldog breeds, the English Bulldog is a family favorite. You'll find pictures of some of the cutest (yet ugliest) bulldogs you've ever seen. Although they can be a bit stubborn, English Bulldogs are very loyal to their families and are affectionate and passive. These dogs come in a combination of different colors, including white, red and black.
Golden Retriever
If you live in a happy, go lucky family, then the Golden Retriever is perfect for you. Goldens are smart, easy to train and want to please their owners. They are great hunters, excellent at agility courses and have a high level of activity. Although they can be a bit hyper the first few years, they calm down nicely once they hit about two or three years of age. Their coats are various shades of gold, including an almost red-gold color.
Keeshond
Keeshonds as a breed have been around for centuries. Although most dogs were originally bred for a purpose like hunting, guarding the home or shepherding, the Keeshond was bred to be a companion dog. They are small enough to live comfortably indoors. Although their fur is a bit longer and quite fluffy, regular brushing will keep a Keeshond from excessive shedding. The Keeshond is an ancestor of the Samoyed.
Labrador Retriever
Labradors come in many different colors, but one thing remains the same across the dogs in this breed and that is their fierce love of their families. A Labrador is the type of dog that will wait for you at the door every day when it is about time for you to come home or will whine when the kids get off the school bus to let you know they are on their way up the driveway. According to breed standard, Labs come in yellow, chocolate and black.
Pug
While Pugs might not be the first dogs you think of when you are looking for a family pet, this breed is actually one of the few miniature dogs that are good with children. While there are always exceptions to this, in general Pugs are very mild natured dogs. For pictures of puppies that will melt your heart, you'll want to take a look at the photo gallery.
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Because their head and cheek structure is similar, Staffordshire Bull Terriers are sometimes mistaken for Pit Bulls. However, these dogs can make good family pets. View pictures of Staffordshires with their families and get info on the breed standard. Some of the color combinations include blue, fawn, red, brindle, black or skewbald as well as combinations between these.
Standard Poodle
Although miniatures are sometimes seen as temperamental or hyper, the Standard Poodle is much calmer and makes an excellent and loyal family dog. Poodles are seen in artwork dated as far back as the 1400s, giving this dog breed an interesting history. These dogs desire to please their owners. They can be any solid color, but most commonly will be white, black, gray, apricot, red, brown, cream and silver.
