Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
This school is consistently ranked high with a 100 percent rate of college readiness. Admissions are rigorous for those wanting to attend this highly ranked public school. Things that are looked at include academics, aptitude and even attitude. The school's overall curriculum focus is on math, science and technology, but the school also allows time in the day for other pursuits such as art and music, which are practiced during eighth period. Although the school serves Fairfax county, students also come from outlying areas.
Oxford Academy
Located in Anaheim Union School District in Cypress, California, this school serves grades 7 to 12. It has been recognized as a California Distinguished school. Students are expected to complete an honors based curriculum plus at least five advanced placement courses. The school offers two basic tracks for high school students: Business or Biotechnology and Medical sciences. One unique thing that Oxford Academy does is to assign a core teacher to each student. This teacher meets with the student in what is called a cluster throughout their school career.
Whitney High School
This high school consistently ranks in the top ten. Whitney is located in Cerritos, California and has just over 1,000 students. This college preparatory schools has students in grades 7 through 12. Whitney chooses students based on the California Achievement Test (CAT) and a district created writing exam. The school offers honors courses in English, math, social science and foreign languages. Whitney is part of the ABC Unified School District.
Newcomers High School
Located in Long Island, Newcomers has a 60 percent minority student ratio and a 98.6 percentile performance on the state test. The school serves just under 1,000 students in grades 9 through 12. The focus of this school is a scrupulous program for immigrants. The school offers an "intensive English as a Second Language program". The school is part of New York City's Department of Education, which makes up one of the largest school systems in the United States with more than 1 million students and 1,600 schools.
BASIS Tucson
Based on the educational model of other industrialized countries like Japan, BASIS is a charter school that has a rigorous program of study. AP Exams are part of their requirements for graduating from high school and students must study and pass these tests. BASIS offers classes for grades 5 through 12. Their Master Teacher Campaign may be a big part of the reason for this school's success. The school hires and rewards teachers for excellent and experts in each particular field of study.
High Technology High School
Residing in Lincroft, New Jersey, HTHS serves freshman through senior high school aged students. US News voted this school as one of the top 100 high schools in America. The school focuses on studying science, math and technology. Competition to get into the school is fierce. The school receives well over 300 applications, but only takes 75 new students from that pool. The school is a joint venture between a local community college and the school district. Graduates of HTHS have gone on to higher learning institutions such as Brown, Dartmouth, Duke and Harvard.
Design and Architecture Senior High School
This school serves grades 9 through 12 in Miami, Florida. Even the website for this school shows their pride in the design skills that they teach their students. The school is located in Miami's high profile fashion design area, creating many opportunities for students to be mentored and have their designs and work seen by others. The school offers programs in architecture, visual communications, industrial design, fine art, fashion and entertainment.
Pine View School
This school is geared toward gifted students in Sarasota County Schools. The school actually serves children from second grade all the way up to grade 12. Students are recommended by teachers, principals and counselors. A series of tests are given and a board reviews the applications and makes a final decision. High school students have the flexibility to start their school day earlier or later and end accordingly. In addition to advanced placement courses in core subjects, there are many specialized fine arts classes.
The Early College at Guilford
This magnet school is part of Guilford County Schools. This school is located in Greensboro, North Carolina. Deadline for fall applications is typically in March. Admission is based on academics and testing. Classes are actually taken on a college campus and upper level high school students earn college credits for their work. Freshmen take honors classes, tenth graders take AP courses and eleventh and twelfth graders take undergraduate college level courses through Guilford College.
Loveless Academic Magnet Program
Located in the heart of Montgomery Alabama's public school system, Loveless Academic Magnet Program (LAMP) offers honors and AP courses in many different subjects. Acceptance is by application and is based on academic performance. The school lists suggested courses that should have been completed before applying such as Algebra I and Physical Science for entering freshmen and Geometry and Physical Science for tenth graders.
