Top 10 List     how we choose
3D Video Recorder
You live your life in three dimensions, so why not record life's precious moments in 3D as well. Although this invention is still fairly new and the first ones are expected to cost over $1,000, the price is certain to come down with time and make this new gizmo much more affordable for the masses. The camera is from Panasonic and records on SD cards. You can create 3D movies by attaching a lense, or just take very high definition shots without the lense. You'll also find articles on topics like Thomas Edison's oddest inventions.
Electric Eye
A Harvard and M.I.T. team is doing research on an electronic eye with hopes that the device can be used to help the blind see. A microchip is implanted in the eyeball. The chip then fires stimulating the optic nerve. Right now, it only works when a special pair of glasses that work like a camera are worn. While the electric eye won't help a blind person see perfectly, it can help them navigate a room and gain some additional independence in their lives. This is an amazing invention in the world of vision. Expect to see human trials in a couple of years. There are many medical research advances being made at Harvard, so it's little surprise that they are at the forefront of this interesting invention.
High Speed Helicopter
Although helicopters are great for short trips, they can be a bit slow. The invention of high speed helicopters seems pretty promising for solving this dilemma. Sikorsky has a prototype for the X2 helicopter and seems pretty committed to creating this mode of transportation for military use. Sikorsky produces both military and commercial helicopters. In September of 2010, the company built an aircraft using the X2 technology. That aircraft beat all previous speed records for speed, so Sikorsky is building two more prototypes. You can even take an online tour of their available helicopters.
Hybrid-Electric Car
Hybrid cars are one possible solution to rising oil prices. Although there are many options in hybrid cars and alternative fuel cars, the hybrid-electric car seems most promising and is currently available for consumers in the form of cars such as the Ford Escape and the Chevrolet Volt. The site offers a list of currently available hybrid cars and offers a very simple, easy to understand explanation of how an electric hybrid works. In its simplist form, the hybrid-electric simply adds rechargeable batteriess and an electric motor.
iPad
Although at first glance the Apple iPad may look like a larger version of the iPod touch, this little portable computer is so much more. Some of the features of the iPad include the ability to browse online, view and respond to e-mail, watch videos in landscape or portrait view and pull up maps to help you find your way. Connect in to 3G networks or Wi-Fi just about anywhere you travel. You may also want to take a minute to watch the video about Velcro and iPad, two of the most interesting inventions in the last 100 years.
iPhone
It hardly seems fair that one company has so many of the neatest gadgets around, but Apple has the iPad and the iPhone. Those are just two, as they also offer the iPod and iPod Touch, which are interesting MP3 gadgets all on their own. If the cell phone is one of the biggest inventions in the last century, the iPhone takes that invention a step further, allowing you to integrate with your home calendar, get online from anywhere and track everything from calories to money spent with an application. In fact, the iPhone is changing the way people do everything from banking to grocery shopping.
Keplar Space Telescope
Although the Keplar Telescope is not something you can pick up for a gift at your local Target store, it is worth mentioning when talking about amazing inventions. This telescope has allowed NASA scientists to see far more of space than they've ever seen before. This telescope is actually a space craft that roams the Milky Way Galaxy and searches for far off planets. It has discovered hundreds of possible planets and scientists believe there may be millions just in the Milky Way Galaxy. Much of the estimation is not from what the telescope can see but from what it can measure.
Project Natal
Project Natal began as an idea for the future of gaming, where the system would scan the players body and the player would have no need of controls. Similar to the way the Wii works, but without the controller, Project Natal quickly turned into Kinect, which is now available for the Xbox 360. This new full-body gaming is sure to change the overall way that many games are created. Now, you can be right in the middle of the action, moving and fighting and dancing and doing many other motions for just about any adventure you can imagine. The number of games are currently a bit limited, but that is certain to change as the system gains popularity.
Smart Thermostat
One of the really interesting things about this invention is that you can control the temperature of your home from anywhere. Have to work late and don't want the temperature kicking up to 72 degrees until you're almost home? You can reset the thermostat for that. Last minute trip you weren't planning on? You can set your thermostat to save you money without having to run all the way home. Ecobee offers home management systems and also offers energy management for all sizes of businesses.
Teleportation
While mankind is still a long way from being able to teleport people like in the Star Trek shows, researchers at several different universities and at IBM have successfully researched teleported atoms and photons, which is a huge advance in this field. For now, it is most likely to be used to speed up computers, but who knows where the technology might one day lead. Will it be possible to teleport from your living room to a tropical beach somewhere? You'll have to wait and see where this technology goes, but the initial studies are very exciting.
