Berklee College of Music This college has been around for
over 50 years and specializes in teaching students not only music but
how to appreciate contemporary music and jazz. It is the largest higher
education institution that teaches contemporary music. Berklee alumni
have won many
awards, including the Grammy, Emmy and Oscar. The school is located
in Boston, Massachusetts and teaches about 4,000 students at any given

Eastman School of Music Located in Rochester, New York,
Eastman School of Music is extremely selective. They admit only around
250 new students each year. The school is known for its jazz and opera
programs. Newsweek called Eastman "the hottest music school in
America". In addition to their degree and certificate programs, Eastman
also offers summer programs. The summer programs are for college
students, but they also have workshops for middle school and high school

Jacobs School of Music Jacobs School of Music is located at
Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Jacobs often vies for one of
the top
10 music schools with big names like Julliard, making it a powerhouse in its
own right. The school is home to choirs and orchestras, but you'll also
find students studying modern forms of music. The school offers many
opportunities to perform. There are several
music performance halls like the Musical Arts Center (MAC), Auer

Conservatory of Music - Lawrence University This school is
located in Appleton, Wisconsin. The school focuses on undergraduate
students and caters to about 350 of them at a time. The school is
affectionately called "The Con". There are several steps for
applying to this school. In addition to filling out a regular
student application, you'll also need to audition if you plan to seek a
degree in music from Lawrence. The school requires a music resume and

Mannes College The New School for Music Located in New York
City, Mannes is over 90 years old. In addition to its many undergraduate
programs, the school also offers training for children and adults in the
area. The school offers hundreds of performances each year. The school
boasts alumni that have won awards in music composition, such as
Patricia Neway, Murray Perahia and Shulamit Ran. You can start the

England Conservatory Also located in Boston,
Massachusetts, New England Conservatory (NEC) is the oldest music
college in the country. The school was
founded in 1867. The school offers both graduate and undergraduate
programs to about 750 students a year. Facilities at NEC include Jordan
Hall, Brown Hall, Williams Hall, Keller Room and Pierce Hall. |  |

Oberlin Conservatory of Music This music college is
located in Oberlin, Ohio. Admission to the school is not an easy
process. Expect a difficult audition process. However, Oberlin College
offers several degrees and you can even work on a dual degree at this
school. The school has a rich
history and was founded in 1833. The conservatory was started in
1865. There are many opportunities to perform with more than 500 shows

Shepherd School of Music - Rice University The school is
located in Houston, Texas and is part of Rice University. It is a fairly
new music school of a bit over 30 years, but that doesn't stop the
school from offering a world class music education. The school only
accepts about 12 to 13 percent of students who
apply for admission. The school puts on more than 400 concerts and

The Julliard School The famous music college located in New
York City was
founded in 1905, although it was first called the Institute of
Musical Art. A mere seven percent of those who apply to Julliard
actually make it into the prestigious school. About 800 undergraduate
students are at the school. The school teaches music, dance and drama.

University of Michigan School of Music, Theater and Dance
Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, this music school offers both graduate
and undergraduate classes in music. The school dates all the way back to
1880, although the name has changed a bit here and there over time. The
application progress is tough, but fair. Students must have
excellent grades. A panel reviews the academics and the performance
background of the individual and then decides whether or not to invite
