Top Prom Themes

Top 10 List     how we choose
Masquerade
Masquerades offer an opportunity to dress up as someone famous, glamorous or mysterious for the evening. Whether you choose to have a prom that requires full costumes or just masks, you can make the event as elegant or informal as you'd like. Typically, a masquerade prom dress is a classical style dress with a full skirt and scooped neckline that comes with a matching, rhinestone or feather enhanced mask.
Night in Venice
An Italian themed prom can set a romantic mood for the evening. Props can include backdrops that look like Venetian canals and a gondola with twinkle lights. Some white pillars wrapped in ivy and small lights can add even more to the ambiance. if serving food, consider sticking to an Italian menu, such as pastas and spumoni for dessert. You can also line the entryway with a tan cobblestone flat paper to give the appearance of a paved walkway leading up to a small bridge that goes over "water".
Hollywood
Prom night can start with attendees traipsing down a red carpet and get even better from there. Set the scene with cut outs of famous actors and actresses. Add strands of stars dangling from the ceiling and centerpieces that look like clapboards. Plan ahead of time to have teachers and chaperones serve as fans as students enter the prom venue on the red carpet. The fans should scream, take pictures and ask for autographs. You may also want to do interviews Entertainment Tonight style. Other prom themes on this site include Gilligan's Island, Spring Fling and Saturday Night Fever.
Candy Land
Candy Land is a popular theme at birthday parties as well as proms. Because it is so popular, it is easy to find decorations for this theme. In addition to cutouts of Candy Land characters, party supply stores carry giant gum drops and lollipops. Create a game board path out of pieces of construction paper to wind throughout the venue. Centerpieces can be made up of lollipop bouquets. Scatter candy across the tables and build a candy castle for a photo opportunity.
Under the Stars
You just can't go wrong with a starry night theme. Even prom committees with a tight budget can cut out cardboard stars, cover them in foil and hang hundreds of them down from the ceiling to create a magical world. With an under the stars theme. drape everything in black and then add gold and silver stars. Twinkle lights can also take on the appearance of stars in the night sky when placed strategically. This ranks right up there with other romantic prom themes like roses.
Under the Sea or Beach Party
Take your classmates under the sea or at least oceanside with this ocean prom theme. Under the sea is a popular theme for kids parties and you can use some of these ideas to decorate your prom. Start with some ocean scene setters that you can cover the walls with and make the room feel like an ocean floor. Add tan paper flooring to create the look of a sandy ocean bed. Hang fish, starfish and seahorses everywhere. Even the punch can be blue. The site offers a nice selection of teen party ideas if this theme isn't quite right for you.
Paris
A Paris theme can be great fun at a prom. Imagine a replica of the Eiffel Tower as teens enter the prom where pictures can be taken. Add in a dark room, a starry sky made out of strands of small white lights and glowing candles on all the tables. You can even purchase romantic fountains, Parisian lamp posts and mini Eiffel Towers with tea lights on each table. Complete the ambiance with a bit of romantic music.
Casino
A casino themed night can be a lot of fun, just make sure that students aren't gambling with real money. Give everyone a certain number of poker chips and offer prizes in exchange for those chips. Party rental stores may offer casino items like a roulette table and blackjack tables. You'll want to hire professionals to come in and run these tables, so you get the authentic feel of a real blackjack dealer handing out cards. Have waitresses walking around and offering guests mock cocktails made of fruit punch and ginger ale. Some other party themes include a murder/mystery party or a Roaring 20s Speakeasy.

For the centerpiece, place a small life preserver in the center of the table and add a short vase filled with fresh flowers or a wide bowl filled with water and floating candles.

A medieval prom requires a bit more forethought, but the memories this theme will provide will last a lifetime. Set up a cardboard cutout of a castle in one corner. Encourage attendees to dress in period costumes. Place knights in the corner. Serve drinks in goblets and food medieval style. Hang wall banners that state the name of your school and the year. Provide a stone wall backdrop for photographs. You may even want to hang some medieval art on the walls.
