Top 10 List     how we choose
Carrie
Based on one of Stephen King's early novels. A young girl has telekinetic powers and an abusive mother. The kids at school make fun of Carrie because she is a little different than the other girls, she acts strange. As the movie progresses, we learn that Carrie's powers seem even stronger when she is angry or scared. When a couple of her fellow high school students plot to do something horrible to Carrie at the prom, it is certain to spell disaster for everyone. Stars Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurey and John Travolta. There is the original movie, Carrie and there is the sequel which is The Rage: Carrie 2
Dawn of the Dead
Modern remake of Night of the Living Dead, this movie has an edge to it that the original does not. In addition to better special effects, the plot centers around a woman whose child and husband have become the living dead, tried to attack her and somehow she has survived. A cast of unlikely companions come together in a local mall to hide out and fight off zombies. For a real cinematic experience, try the wide screen unrated director's cut of the movie.
The Exorcist
Great horror movies never go out of style. Originally released just after Christmas in 1973, this movie delves into the issue of demonic possession, telling the story of a little girl and her mother and the priest who tries to help her. The movie is not intended for young audiences as it contains disturbing language and themes. In fact, it has been known to terrify adults. The movie stars Linda Blair, Ellen Burstyn and Jason Miller. There is also a three volume set available that contains the original and Exorcist II and III.
Friday the 13th
It all started in May of 1980 when the original Friday the 13th was released. The film is credited for starting the horror films of the 80s and changing the horror genre. Jason drowned at camp as a young boy and now he wants revenge. There seem to be certain formulaic rules about who will be slashed - any young couple making out and any girl who goes into the basement alone. The movie and its sequels were so wildly popular that Friday the 13th X (movie number 10) was recently released.
Halloween
Created by John Carpenter, this film follows the story of Michael Meyers and his sister, played by Jamie Lee Curtis. The story follows a family whose son was institutionalized at the age of six, after killing one of his sisters. Now he is 21 and has escaped from the mental institution. He begins stalking his younger sister and a string of murders take place. The movie is your typical slasher movie but the plot makes it stand out from other low budget films. This series has also been highly successful and includes not only the original Halloween but eight more Halloween films.
Nightmare on Elm Street
One... Two... Freddy's coming for you. This movie has given many teenagers sleepless nights. The story of a killer who gets kids when they fall asleep through their dreams. The website features a Krueger photo gallery. Although the sequels were not as popular as the first movie, there were xx Nightmare on Elm Street movies made, including: Nightmare on Elm Street, Nightmare on Elm Street Part II, Nightmare on Elm Street III: Dream Warriors, Nightmare on Elm Street IV: The Dream Master, Nightmare on Elm Street V: The Dream Child and Nightmare on Elm Street VI: The Final Nightmare.
Poltergeist
Rumors of on-set curses plague these movies years after filming wrapped. The film features some amazing actors such as JoBeth Williams and Craig T. Nelson. The movie centers around a family who experiences some strange phenomenon in their new house. The incidents become increasingly hostile until their young daughter disappears into an other worldly limbo. There are three movies in the series: Poltergeist, Poltergeist II: The Other Side and Poltergeist III. It was announced recently that a fourth movie is being made.
The Sixth Sense
Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment star in this psychological horror flick. The twists and turns in this movie as a counselor tries to help a boy he believes is disturbed will keep the hair on your arms standing on end. "I see dead people," Osment confesses in a creepy whisper. The movie is aptly named as all of the viewer's senses are put into play. Chat with other Sixth Sense fans on the message boards. The movie is now available in a Collector's Edition Series.
The Terminator
Part science fiction, part action and part horror, this movie doesn't seem to fit into any particular genre but will have you biting your nails nevertheless. A robot (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is sent back in time to destroy the future mother of  the man who will become a future resistance leader. Men will love the story because of the big explosions and action-packed plot. Women will enjoy the story because of the romance and in relating to the heroine's plight. There were three movies in this series: The Terminator, The Terminator II: Judgment Day and The Terminator III: Rise of the Machines.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Originally released in 1974, the movie sparked a series of sequels and a prequel. The plot centers around a family in rural Texas who are cannibals. The film is not actually inspired by a true story but is very, very loosely based on the serial killer Ed Gein, who did not use a chainsaw and did not work with his family. The movies include: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre II, Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation.
