In 1930, when Ruth Wakefield discovered
chocolate chip cookies, it was quite by
accident. She meant to add a broken chocolate
bar to her cookie dough and create chocolate
cookies. Instead, she got the first version of
what is today the chocolate chip cookies. She
published her recipes and eventually struck up a
deal with Nestle that allowed her recipe to be
