Call in Sick Reasons

Top 10 List      how we choose

Aches and Pains
One of the first signs of flu can be muscle aches and pains and this can be a good reason to take a sick day at work. Left untreated, the flu can lead to serious complications, so it is important to get plenty of rest and fluids. Find out some of the signs of the flu and some over the counter (OTC) treatments that might be helpful.

Appointments
Many companies allow employees to use sick time for doctor and dentist appointments. If you schedule the appointment for a couple of hours before work is over, you will be able to leave early and still have some free time. Most employers will agree to let you leave at lunch time and not count it against you. As an added bonus, the best time to make a doctor appointment is first thing in the morning or right after lunch.
Diarrhea
If you have loose stools, the last thing you want is to be at the office all day, running back and forth to the bathroom. This can be an embarrassing problem, and chances are that you might be contagious as well. Most bosses would prefer that you stay home when you have this condition. There are some home remedies for diarrhea that you can try that might get you back on your feet quickly.
Getting Extra Rest
Although how much rest each person needs varies, getting a good night's rest can impact work performance and health. If you're suffering from a sleep disorder, it can be important to catch up on some shut eye. If you are honest with your employer about your sleep issues and how they make you feel, most will be understanding and let you use an occasional sick day to catch up on sleep.
Leisure Time
This may not sound like a serious reason to take a sick day. After all, you're not very likely to call your boss and tell him that you're taking the day off to go to the movies. However, planning in some down time can reduce stress and boost mood. If you are the type that doesn't get sick a lot and find yourself with extra sick days, then this may be a reason to take a day. You just may want to think of a different excuse to tell your boss.

Personal Errands
If you work long hours, travel out of town on business or have been working overtime, then you may need some extra time to catch up on errands. Under these circumstances, simply telling your boss that you've been working really hard and need a day to catch up on things at home can be effective. Most superiors will appreciate your honesty and will likely grant you the time off. Then, be sure to consolidate your errands and get them done in a timely and efficient manner.

Quality Time with Kids
Living the life of a working mom or dad can be difficult. While stay at home parents get to go on school field trips and plan class parties, you may feel you are missing out on all these things. Sick days and personal days can be used to attend some of these events, so your child still gets the benefit of your participation from time to time. There are many inexpensive ways to spend this time with your children.
Sick Family Members
Sick children often need a parent to stay home. While there are many ways you can rotate this responsibility, there will be times when you have no other choice than to take the day off and stay home. There are laws in place to help families as well, particularly with prolonged illnesses. Sick leave may also be necessary to care for an ailing mother or father.
Sick Pets
Pets rarely pick convenient times to get sick. If your dog is ill and you feel an emergency trip to the vet is in order, or if your cat was hit by a car just before you were leaving for work, you may need to take at least part of the day off to deal with this emergency crisis. As long as it is a rare occurrence, most employers will be understanding. Become familiar with feline and canine illness symptoms to know when an illness is serious.
Vomiting
It's pretty hard to go to work when you're hugging the porcelain throne in your bathroom. Vomiting is an excuse that just about any employer will not only accept, but be happy to have you remain at home over. There are many different causes for vomiting and stomach issues. Luckily, most of these issues pass within a day or two and you can be back on your feet and back at work.
