Avocado Margarita

Ingredients

  • Lime wedge
  • 1 teaspoon superfine salt
  • ½ avocado, peeled, pitted, and chopped
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 ounce triple sec
  • 2 ounces blanco tequila
  • ½ cup crushed ice
  • Lime zest for garnish

Instructions

  1. Run the lime wedge around the rim of a margarita glass and dip the rim in the salt. Set aside the glass and the lime wedge.
  2. In a blender, combine the avocado, lime juice, triple sec, tequila, and crushed ice. Blend until smooth.
  3. Pour into the prepared margarita glass. Garnish with some finely grated lime zest and the lime wedge.

Substitutions and Variations

This is an unusual margarita that also makes sense; lime and avocado go well together. But don't worry--this drink won't taste like you're sipping a glass of watery guacamole. It's a delightful blended drink you're sure to love. Ready to add some interesting flavors?

  • Add 1 or 2 jalapeño slices for a bit of heat.
  • Add ½ cup of frozen mango chunks and omit the crushed ice to add sweetness.
  • Add ½ cup of frozen watermelon for a sweet and creamy drink.
  • Reduce the lime juice to ½ ounce and add ½ ounce of pineapple juice.
  • Reduce the tequila by ½ ounce and the triple sec and lime juice by ¼ ounce each, and then add 1 ounce of coconut milk or cream of coconut for a creamier margarita.

Garnishes

The fine grating of lime zest adds both aromatics and a punch of lime flavor to this cocktail. Use a rasp style grater and make sure you grate the peel at a very shallow level; you want to avoid the white pith, which is bitter. You can also mix in the lime zest with the salt to rim the glass. Alternatively, mix equal parts superfine sugar and salt to rim the glass.

About the Avocado Margarita

Avocado is a fruit, so it definitely has a place in margaritas. Because it's impossible to juice or muddle an avocado, you need to use avocado chunks and blend the cocktail, so there's no "rocks" version of this drink. But that's okay because the avocado adds richness and creaminess to a tasty, tasty drink. And sure, maybe it seems a little on the nose, but why wouldn't you sip one of these as you munch on some chips and guacamole? It's the perfect start to any great taco night.

Tastin' Away in Avo-Ritaville

The avocado margarita (avo-rita) is a surprising treat. It's thick, creamy, and satisfying whether you're sipping it on Taco Tuesday (the happiest day of the week) or enjoying it simply because it's Thursday and you like tequila and avocados. So the next time you want to blend a margarita, give the delicious and creamy avocado margarita a taste. It may just become your new favorite frozen drink.
