Variations and Substitutions

Passion fruit is a tropical flavor that pairs well with many flavors, so you can dream big if that's what you want, or you can layer on the passion fruit.

  • Instead of a passion fruit juice, add in passion fruit puree for a thicker martini.
  • You can skip the lime juice in favor of lemon juice. You can even consider using freshly squeezed orange juice.
  • Skip the pineapple liqueur and use pineapple juice for that sweet acidic flavor. Or swap in passion fruit liqueur.
  • Vanilla pairs exceptionally well with passion fruit, so give vanilla vodka a try.

Garnishes

The passion fruit martini relies on a passion fruit wedge to set itself apart, but it can be challenging to track down fresh passion fruit. Instead, you can use a lemon or orange wheel as your finishing touch. You can even stack a few fruits together with a cocktail skewer, such as a pineapple wedge with an orange wheel and lemon ribbon. The passion fruit martini is a deluxe cocktail; dress it up as such.

About the Passion Fruit Martini

Passion fruit is a luxuriously tropical fruit that's a product of the passion fruit flower, a warm-weather vining plant. It's most often found in juice mixes but is well-deserving of a chance to shine in a martini glass. Once you get past the skin, the inside of the passion fruit houses the pulpy, juicy seeds that hold the secret to passion fruit juice and puree. The seeds have a savory flavor, with a delicate and natural balance of sweet and tangy. Its flavors are a combination of mango and pineapple with a hint of tart lime.

Knowing the tasty complexity of passion fruit, the flavor of your martini can be as complex or simple as you want. These complementary flavors even give a little freedom to further highlight the juicy flavors of passion fruit by using a passion fruit rum. And if you want your passion fruit martini to be nonalcoholic, use three ounces of passion fruit juice, an ounce of lime juice, with a half-ounce each of pineapple juice and cream of coconut.
