Tequila doesn't get much love by way of flavor infusions. But just because a company doesn't value the flavor doesn't mean you can't do it. So bring home your favorite bottle of silver tequila and make your own infused tequila that'll bring the party.

Hibiscus-infused Tequila

Explore floral notes in your tequila with a colorful and delicious hibiscus flavor.

hibiscus infused tequila cocktail

Ingredients

  • 4½ tablespoons dried hibiscus flowers
  • 750mL tequila
  • Two large, clean bottles or jars
  • Cheesecloth or other fine strainer
  • Funnel

Instructions

  1. In a large, clean bottle or jar, add the dried hibiscus and tequila.
  2. Seal tightly, then firmly shake to mix the infusion.
  3. Store in a cool, dark place for approximately three to four days, firmly shaking the infusion each day.
  4. As the time ends, sample the flavors by pouring the infusion into a glass. If you want more flavor, allow the hibiscus to steep longer.
  5. Carefully remove hibiscus by hand and discard.
  6. Funnel the infused tequila into the second clean bottle, filtering with the cheesecloth.
  7. Carefully seal and store in a cool, dry place.

You can use the infused tequila right away. You can store any unused tequila in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dark place for approximately one to two years before the flavor dwindles. Discard when the flavor starts to fade or tastes "off."

Coffee-infused Tequila

Give your margaritas and other tequila drinks a little extra buzz by infusing the tequila with coffee.

  • Make things a little more spiced by adding two to three whole cinnamon sticks, or a tablespoon of cloves or star anise.
  • Kick things into a fruity gear and add two sliced apples or pears, or a cup of pitted and sliced peaches, apricots, or plums, or even a cup of pomegranate seeds.
  • Make your infused tequila a little sweeter with a half cup of honey or maple syrup.
