Variations and Substitutions

Like the key lime pie dessert, you can approach the key lime pie martini in several different ways.

  • Try whipped cream vodka in place of rum.
  • For a tropical kick, use coconut rum instead of silver rum.
  • You can always use lime juice instead of key lime juice in a pinch.
  • Use heavy cream for a richer flavor.

You can enjoy key lime pie without any topping, with whipped cream, or the usual meringue. Use these dessert garnishes as inspiration for your cocktail garnish.

  • Opt for key lime zest, or regular lime zest, as a garnish
  • Add a lime wheel or slice, or use a lime ribbon, twist, or peel.
  • Include a dollop of whipped cream to make yours even more dessert-like.
  • You can easily skip the rim garnish, as well.

About the Key Lime Pie Martini

While found throughout Southeast Asia, key limes have found a new home in the Florida Keys, boosting its popularity, with even more thanks due to key lime pie. Unlike their traditional lime counterparts, key limes are yellow, including their juice, giving both the key lime pie dessert and key lime pie martini a yellow hue.

Key lime pie is a luscious combination of egg, condensed milk, and key lime juice- topped off with an airy meringue. The result is a dessert unlike any other, but it's also not a dessert most can make at the drop of a hat. Enter the key lime pie martini. Ready in half the time and without running to the store for special ingredients, you can even get by with regular lime juice and a splash of lemon juice.
