Michelle Radcliff is a freelance writer and former business owner with a background in home furnishings and the travel industry. She has a diploma in interior decorating and an Associate of Arts degree in Travel and Tourism. Michelle's professional web writing began in 2006, starting with her online business and numerous titles written for other online publishing companies.
Bedding and Furniture
Michelle has a passion for beautiful interiors and the elements that go into making a house a home. In 2006, she started a small business selling home décor and furniture. During the eight years Michelle ran her business, she learned a lot working with designers, manufacturers, importers and distributors in the home furnishings industry, making connections across the country and even halfway around the world. Countless hours of research went in to choosing quality furniture suppliers such as Padama's Plantation, Rustic Natural Cedar, Jewels of Java and Frontier Ironworks. Michelle had the most success selling bedding, working with the New York based distributor, Pem America. Also intensely popular were the hand embroidered, Indian-style duvet covers, bedspreads, pillow covers and wall tapestries made and shipped directly from Pakistan.
Once she signed on as a reseller for Meyda Lighting, Michelle became invested in learning the history of Tiffany lamps, including the traditional method of how they were made and the original designs inspired by Tiffany Studios. Her research expanded into lighting and interior designs with Arts and Crafts, Mission, Art Nouveau and Victorian influences. She also studied the history and designs of antique period furniture in her course studies for interior decorating.
Michelle designed her home furnishings website with a tropical theme, encouraging visitors to escape into a virtual paradise of treasures for the home, hence the name, HomeTreasureCove. She wrote all the copy for her site, providing information and tips specific to the content of each landing page. She also had to become familiar with basic html coding, SEO and meta tags.
Through article marketing, blogging and producing newsletters about various types of home décor and home decorating ideas, Michelle discovered a love of writing and sharing creative ideas. Her career was taking a new direction into the world of freelance writing. Shortly after joining LoveToKnow in 2010, she became a Featured Contributor on Decorating and Design for Yahoo Voices and earned the Rising Star Award in 2011. Michelle also became a regular contributor on home decorating for Demand Media, now known as Leaf Group. Her published work is featured on eHow, SF Gate and Hunker.com.
In 2014, Michelle closed her online retail store to focus full time on writing. That same year, Yahoo discontinued their contributor network and removed all published articles. Michelle updated and republished some of her most popular Yahoo articles on her blog, Home Decorating News, where readers can contact her for decorating advice.
Michelle decided to expand her knowledge on decorating and design and signed up for interior decorating classes. Through her cousework studies she learned about color theory, furniture styles, fabrics, lighting, the elements and principles of interior design, how to create floorplans and much more. She enjoyed getting hands on experience with virtual design tools when putting together a complete redecorating plan for a living room. Michelle completed the interior decorator program at Penn Foster Career School and earned her diploma in 2013.
Travel and Tourism Background
In 1996, Michelle attended travel school at Professional Careers in Las Vegas, Nevada (now closed). She earned an Associate of Arts degree in Travel and Tourism, which included an externship at the school’s travel agency, Discount Travel, and a cruise to Ensenada, Mexico. Michelle spent a brief time working from home as an outside travel agent before taking on a new role as a mom.
Kids and Parenting
Despite the complications of a difficult pregnancy, Michelle's daughter, Jami, arrived in September of 1998. A few months later, Jami’s older half-sister, Jasmin, joined the family. Going from no children to suddenly having two children in a blended family called for some lifestyle adjustments but at this point, Michelle had become well-versed in adapting to change. Her experience in being both a parent and step parent provided the insight needed to become a Featured Contributor on Parenting and Family for Yahoo Voices.
Additional Interests and Life Experiences
Growing up in Wyoming, Michelle enjoyed many outdoor activities included camping, hiking, fishing and horseback riding. However, her life changed abruptly at the age of 15 when she broke her neck in an automobile accident. With the help and support of her parents, Michelle left Wyoming her senior year of high school to attend a physical therapy clinic in Las Vegas, Nevada that was using FES (Functional Electric Stimulation). Michelle loved the warm desert climate and continues to make Las Vegas her home today.
Michelle still enjoys the great outdoors and exploring the miles of wheelchair accessible hiking trails in areas such as Lake Mead, Zion and The Grand Canyon. As a paranormal enthusiast, Michelle has read dozens of books on ghosts, hauntings and near death experiences and her DVR is loaded with investigative haunting shows. She's even made it to a few of the most notorious haunted locations in the Southwest including The Amargosa Opera House and Hotel in Death Valley, California, The Bircage Theater and Boothill Graveyard in Tombstone, Arizona and The Pioneer Saloon in Goodsprings, Nevada.
