Lisa Maloney got her start covering outdoor recreation for a local paper. Nowadays you'll find her work in major print and online publications, and she often mentors others through the writing process. She's especially passionate about fitness, travel, green living, plus anything and everything to do with the outdoors.
Fitness and Dance
Lisa's a certified personal trainer and a reformed gym rat. Now that she's escaped the gym she makes it a point to find other ways of working out, including running, martial arts and dance. She's crazy about social Latin dancing and all types of Irish dancing.
Lisa's love for the outdoors starts with hiking and backpacking, but extends to almost any type of outdoor recreation. From beachcombing to rock and ice climbing, if you can do it outside, she's probably tried it--and loved it.
Lisa got her start as a writer by documenting her outdoors adventures for a local paper. Since then she has spent thousands of hours in the outdoors and published hundreds of columns, articles and features on all facets of outdoor life. She is the author of "50 Hikes Around Anchorage" and is the Hiking Expert for About.com.
Lisa has traveled extensively, exploring Europe, Mexico, Canada and most of the United States, and makes a significant portion of her income from travel writing; her current project is an updated edition of the Moon Alaska travel handbook. She often travels solo, and always makes it a point to get off the beaten path and away from "tourist towns." Lisa speaks, reads and writes fluent Spanish.
Some aspects of Western medicine are truly amazing, but Lisa firmly believes in the value of natural remedies (including herbs, exercise and proactive healthy living) for treating many conditions. She managed a health food store for five years and studied with a master herbalist.
Lisa's an avid knitter, but her passion for crafting doesn't stop there. She also crochets, cross-stitches, quilts, and runs a small side business selling her creations.
Lisa makes her living as a full-time freelance writer and editor. Her favorite facets of the job are mentoring new writers and doing developmental editing for new authors.
