Substitutions and Variations

This recipe provides a great template for a variety of soft fruit margarita flavors. All you need to do is replace the strawberries with ½ cup of chopped soft, juicy fruits. Try:

  • Any type of berries
  • Cantaloupe
  • Honeydew
  • Watermelon
  • Papaya
  • Mango
  • Passion fruit
  • Guava

You can also muddle a few jalapeño slices with the fruit and orange liqueur for a spicy fruit margarita.

Garnishes

The classic garnish is a strawberry. To garnish your margarita with a whole strawberry, use a sharp knife to make a diagonal cut along the edge of the whole berry so you can easily place it on the glass rim. You can also put the berry on a cocktail spear. For a more modern presentation, float a dried strawberry on top of the drink or attach it to the glass with a miniature clothespin along with a dried lime slice.

About the Strawberry Margarita

After the classic margarita, the strawberry margarita is the most popular flavor for this tequila sour. This recipe uses a standard margarita recipe of equal parts lime juice and orange liqueur to two parts tequila and adds muddled fruit. For a sweeter margarita, use ¾ ounce of strawberry liqueur in place of the muddled strawberries. When using fresh strawberries, this cocktail is at its best when the fruit is picked fresh off the vine in season.

Liquid Joy

With its juicy, sweet strawberry flavors and the classic notes of agave and lime, strawberry margaritas are a delight to drink. And they're so easy to make, you can have one ready in just a few minutes. With all that going for it, why wouldn't you mix up a strawberry margarita or another margarita flavor any time you have fresh strawberries?
