Managing, minimizing, and clearing negativity and negative energy require both long-term and short-term feng shui approaches. There are things you can do right now to clear or manage negative energy (sha chi), but if you don't use feng shui to deal with the root causes of the negativity, it will return.

Get Rid of Negative Energy Right Now

Feng shui and other energy healing traditions offer many cleanses to help you remove negative energy from your home immediately. Remember, these are temporary fixes, and you'll need to implement long-term solutions to keep negativity at bay.

Perform a Cleansing Burn

A cleansing burn is easy to do and has an immediate impact in the energy of a space. Perform one as soon as you notice negativity creeping in and repeat as needed. A regular maintenance schedule of once a week is ideal regardless of whether you're experiencing negativity at the moment.

Use the Salt Water Cure

The salt water cure is easy to do, and it sucks the negativity right out of your home. It will provide immediate relief from negative energy.

Use Sound

You can also use sound healing instruments, such as singing bowls or tingshas, to clear negative energy immediately in a space. Sound the instrument and walk around your house in a clockwise direction.

Use Natural Salt or Crystals

Place black crystals, such as hematite or black tourmaline, in the corners of your home and each room to absorb negative energy. You can also wear these crystals for protection against personal negativity. Likewise, you can place small bowls of sea salt or Himalayan pink salt around your home to absorb the negative energy. Cleanse the crystals and replace the salt once or twice a week, or when you notice the negativity returning.

Burn Epsom Salts

Epsom salts also absorb negativity. You can burn Epsom salts (follow instructions carefully) to cleanse your space or add them to bathwater to cleanse personal negativity.

Use an Aromatherapy Spray

You can easily make and use an aromatherapy spray to clear negativity. In a spray bottle, combine 2 ounces of water, 1 teaspoon of Himalayan pink salt or sea salt, 10 drops of lavender essential oil, and 10 drops of sandalwood essential oil. Shake well and spritz all around your home or space. To clear personal negativity, spritz it in a circle above the top of your head and allow the mist to rain down on you.

Use Feng Shui Cures to Manage Negativity

Feng shui cures can help manage negativity over a longer term, but they still aren't a cure-all. If you have things you know for sure are contributing to the negative energy in your homes, activate cures to help neutralize it.

Correct Imbalances of Element Energy

You may need to activate or deactivate element energy. If you have too much energy in any sector of your home, you'll want to add feng shui cures to weaken it. If there is too little element energy, you'll need to add appropriate elements to activate the energy. The important thing to remember is to create a balance of energy and not over-compensate, which will make matters worse.

Remedy or Remove Poison Arrows

Roads that dead-end at your driveway, buildings that overshadow your home, corners of neighbor's outbuildings or home that point to your home are just a few of the possible exterior poison arrows. Place a bagua mirror outside or in a window turned out so the mirror reflects the poison arrows away from your home. Deflect interior poison arrows created by architectural features with plants, multi-faceted crystal balls suspended from the ceiling, or by moving the object or furniture creating the poison arrow.

Use Basic Techniques to Keep Negative Energy at a Minimum

There are simple things that you can do without an analysis to reduce and minimize any negative aspects in your home.

Declutter

You've probably heard this many times and there's a reason why you have. Clutter is the most detrimental and source of negative energy. It clogs the flow of chi energy through your home. Blocked energy brings stagnation, disease and financial loss, so it's imperative that you get rid of the clutter.

Repair Leaky Faucets

Go through your home and test all faucets. Get underneath the sink and make sure fittings are secure and you don't have any leaking water. Leaky faucets draw negative energy into your financial arena. A constant leaking faucet drains your finances.

Fix Toilets That Constantly Run

If you have a toilet that runs or you have to jiggle the handle to make it stop running, then it's time to buy a new float kit and replace the existing one. Unchecked this creates a negative impact on your finances, usually in the form of mounting never-ending bills.

Clean Your Home

Keeping your home clean is just common sense for good hygiene, but it's easy to neglect, especially if you have a busy lifestyle. The accumulation of dirt, dust, and cobwebs blocks chi from entering your home and causes a buildup of negative chi. Don't let the dirty dishes accumulate in your sink. This stops the flow of your money and puts you in limbo.

Keep Everything in Working Order

If you have any equipment that doesn't function properly, either get it repaired or replace it. A malfunctioning piece of equipment attracts negative energy and soon you'll notice other appliances, computers, and equipment begin to break down.

Light It Up

If you have any room in your home, usually the North facing room, that is overly dark, then bring in more light. Replace heavy draperies with blinds or shutters. Buy a couple of floor lamps that reflect light onto the ceiling. If your ceiling is white, then the additional light is magnified.

Enter With Chi

Examine your outside entrance into your home. Are there any obstacles blocking the way that you must walk around in order to gain entry? If so, remove this immediately. Obstacles in a pathway, either outside or inside your home, creates negative chi and deflects good chi attempting to enter your home. If this happens, then the existing chi in your home becomes trapped and stagnant. Make sure your outside entrance is well lit, landscaped and welcoming. These things reduce the negative chi and assist healthy chi to thrive.

House with curb appeal

Beautify Inside and Outside

Beautiful landscapes and interiors draw equal energy just as a dilapidated neglected home attracts negative energy. If you're like most people, you have a budget by which you live. There are things you can do, as you can see by now, that require little to no money that reduces and eliminates negative energy.

  • Create a plan of action and tackle the outside of your home.
  • Trim the shrubbery. If it's too overgrown or a few decades old and dying underneath, then replace it.
  • Paint the exterior. Peeling paint creates a pattern of negative energy because the places where the paint is separating from the wood traps energy. It's the same principle as clutter and dirt accumulating in your home. Scrape away the old paint and give your house a fresh coat of paint.

Fix Areas That Contribute to Negative Energy

If you know enough about feng shui, you can conduct an analysis of your home using Form and Compass Schools of feng shui or Black Hat Sect feng shui. This will reveal important feng shui information you can then use to remedy problem areas.

Calculate a Flying Star Chart

Form and Compass feng shui, also known as classical feng shui, is the best way to determine negative influences affecting your home. You'll need to know the year your home was completed, take a compass reading to determine your house's facing direction, and create a Flying Star chart of your home.

Feng shui consultation

This chart reveals the areas of your home that need feng shui cures to either activate elements or reduce the negative effects of elements. This is the most important chart for reducing negativity in your home. If you don't know how to chart your home, then you should turn to a feng shui expert who practices classical feng shui.

Using Feng Shui for Managing and Minimizing Negativity

Understanding how negative chi builds up in your home is just the first step to managing and minimizing negativity. You can advance as far as you desire in your feng shui learning and practices. The tools a feng shui practitioner or student uses such as the Flying Star Chart can help you eliminate some of the more powerful negative influences hidden in your home.
